What is The Pupil Premium?
The pupil premium grant is additional funding for publicly funded schools in England. It’s a school-level grant that gives schools extra resources to help them meet challenges faced by some pupils. The Government provides The Pupil Premium grants to ensure that support will reach disadvantaged pupils or those groups identified as vulnerable to under achievement. The purpose of the grant is to:
- improve the academic outcomes of disadvantaged pupils of all abilities
- close the attainment gap between disadvantaged pupils and their peers
Currently these groups are identified as:
- pupils who are looked after by the local authority or are post-adopted
- pupils who are currently or have been eligible for FSM at any point in the last six years (also known as Ever 6 FSM)
- pupils whose parents are currently serving in the armed forces
At Chrishall Primary School, we review the needs of all pupils continuously. We plan our Pupil Premium Strategy to reflect the key priorities to meet these needs. We aim to support the whole child by developing our strategy to include budgeting for academic achievement, emotional wellbeing and enrichment initiatives as well as continuing the development and training of our staff team to support pupils. Reviewing the strategy throughout the year, ensures the grant is used to have the maximum impact for the pupils in our school.
If your child does not have Free School Meals, but may be eligible because of your family’s income level, you can apply through the Essex County Council website. Even if you do not wish them to have the meals, this would mean the school could still claim Pupil Premium Grant funding that may be used to help your child. All cases are treated in confidence.
Pupil Premium - What is the strategy
The strategy is a plan of how we plan to allocate Pupil Premium funding over the academic year. It should be built on good practices that are proven to have real impact for pupils.

Headlines 2019-20
- The grant for 2019-20 was £8560
- Five pupils attracted Pupil Premium grant funding at the beginning of the school year (<5% of school population)
- Attendance figures were severely impacted by Covid 19 response.
- No SATS were taken at end of KS1 or KS2. Prior to lockdown, pupils attracting PP achieved targeted steps in progress.
Chrishall Primary School is committed to developing and improving practices for all pupils. The Pupil Premium Strategy for 2020-21 increases significantly to £13,760. This is due to five additional children becoming eligible for grants. This year’s strategy seeks to build on the groundwork begun in 2019-20, with a renewed emphasis in reading resources and 1:1 tuition. In addition, investment in continuing professional development in the areas of dyslexia and emotional well-being has been prioritized. This is in response to recognized need in the cohort and impact of the pandemic on pupil and family well-being.
Regular Pupil Progress Meetings allow us to ensure that the funding is having a positive impact on learning, progress and attainment and that planned strategies are having the intended outcome.
Going forward, the leadership team is drawing up a three year strategic plan known as the “Pupil Premium Multi Year Strategy” to support further continuing professional development to ensure good practices; recruitment of personnel to support groups or individuals; allocation of funding to support home-school learning opportunities; targeted resources where disadvantage may arise; opportunities for pupils for pupils to develop and nurture interests and talents and budgeting for outside agencies to support emotional well-being and mental health of pupils.
